Matthew Stafford spoke with Dean Legge for a short time Sunday night.

Dean Legge: Tell me about winning the State Championship...

Matthew Stafford: It was awesome.

It wasn’t very close – was it?

No it’s was the biggest blowout in Texas high school history (in a title game).

When are you going to get to Athens?

January 4th.

Describe the feeling of winning the state title.

It was awesome – a dream come true. It was an unreal feeling.

Looking forward a little bit, what are your expectations as far as the spring is concerned?

I am going to go up there and try to get better. I am going to try to pick up the offense.

You realize that there are expectations that you will come in and compete for the starting job…

Yeah, that’s fine with me. I like competition – I think everyone does. Competition makes the people around you better.

Did you watch Georgia play for the SEC Title?

No – I couldn’t.

What did you think when you heard they had won it.

I thought it was awesome. I was happy for them.

There has been a lot made of you and your ex-girlfriend breaking up – do you think people are making too big of a deal about that?

Do I think people are making too big a deal about that?

Is that anyone’s business?

No – not at all.

What are you looking forward to the most about coming to Athens?

Learning the offense and trying to compete and play.

Have you thought about you will be doing next August and September? Have you envisioned playing in the fall?

That’s something I’d like to do, but I want to help the team win – whatever that is.

Are you happy to be leaving high school this early?

Yeah, its fine with me. I’m ready.

Have you gotten tired of the phone calls and the hype surrounding your situation with Georgia?

Yeah – kind of, but I understand.
