Georgia's 72-point win was a single point better than the previous mark established against South Carolina State in 1989 and UNC Asheville in 1995.
“Everybody is happy in the locker room, and that’s great" said Georgia head coach Andy Landers. "It’s good when everybody gets to play. It’s great when everybody gets to score."
The Lady Bulldogs stole the ball a season-high 19 times. Georgia is now 5-0 when scoring more than 80 points this season, improving to 364-5 when reaching that mark in Landers’ 27 seasons at UGA.
Sherill Baker led the team with 19 points and four steals. Her four steals tonight put her 18 away from school record-holder Teresa Edwards. She also moved past Tawana McDonald into the No.17 position among the Lady Dogs’ career scoring leaders. Baker now has 1,229 career points, just five shy of the current No.16 Stacey Ford.
Megan Darrah scored 18 points, shooting 4-of-4 from three-point range and contributing to the Lady Bulldogs season-high 57.1 percent shooting beyond the arch. Tasha Humphrey had her third double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and bringing down 10 rebounds. She has now recorded 17 double-doubles in her career. Cori Chambers added 15 points and freshman Danielle Taylor, a native of Savannah, scored a career-high 11. Janese Hardrick led the team with six assists. Savannah State was held to six percent shooting in the first half going 1-18.
“Coming into this game, our intent and focus was on defense." said Landers. "In the second half, we played a lot of man-to-man. We got started in the right direction of the way we need to go.”
Tyrika McDaniel led the Lady Tigers with 12 points.
“It was a good experience for a young group of kids coming in trying to compete in this type of atmosphere and also competing against a great Georgia basketball team" said Savannah State head coach Cedric W. Baker.
Following a week off from competition during Final Exams, the Lady Bulldogs next game will be the beginning of a four-game road trip, starting with Temple on Monday, December 19. The next home game will be against Florida on January 8.
