ATHENS - Southeastern Conference football coaches have named University of Georgia's Mark Richt as the 2005 SEC Coach of the Year according to an announcement Wednesday by the league office.

Richt's Bulldogs, picked to finish third in the SEC East prior to the start of the season, won their third SEC East title in the last four years and last Saturday won their second SEC Championship in the last four seasons with the victory over LSU.

In his five seasons at Georgia, Mark Richt has compiled a 52-12 overall record which is the sixth best in the country since 2001. His teams won the SEC East title in 2002, '03, and '05 and the overall league championship in 2002 and '05. Richt directed the Bulldogs to their second SEC championship in the last four seasons.

His 81.3 winning percentage is second all-time among SEC coaches who have coached in the league for five-or-more seasons. Richt is 32-11 against SEC opponents, which is sixth best among all SEC coaches in winning percentage (.744) and 20th in total wins. He's one of only six SEC coaches in history to win two league titles in his first five years coaching (others: Alabama's Frank Thomas, LSU's Bernie Moore and Nick Saban, Florida's Steve Spurrier, and Georgia's Vince Dooley).
