LSU Week: In the trenches part two

Josh Kendall takes a look at the matchup between Georgia's defensive line and LSU's offensive line.

UGA’s defensive line

Quentin Moses has had the kind of season that’s a mixed blessing for the Bulldogs. Before the season began, the junior defensive end says, he was thinking about getting 10 or more sacks this year and not even considering going pro early. Now that he has his 10 sacks, he’s starting to think this could be his last season. A big game against the Tigers might push him to go, but Georgia fans might trade that for a dominating performance. Moses’ 10 sacks are second in the league behind Mississippi State’s Willie Evans’ 12, but Georgia will need more than just him. Hawkinsville’s Charles Johnson has four sacks but none in the four games. Defensive tackles Kedric Golston and Gerald Anderson have been solid all season but need to be special on Saturday.

LSU’s offensive line

The Tigers’ offensive line is tied with Georgia for fewest sacks allowed. Both teams have given up 19, the second best total in the SEC. LSU is paced by senior center Rudy Niswanger and senior tackle Andrew Whitworth. Niswanger is a finalist for the Draddy Trophy, which goes to the collegiate player with the best combination of athletic and academic accomplishments. He also received Thursday the Wuerrfel Trophy, which is billing itself as the “Humanitarian Heisman.” Last week, Whitworth became the only LSU player in history to play in 50 games in his career as he made his 50th start against Arkansas. The Tigers will be without starting guard Will Arnold, a sophomore who also missed the Arkansas game.
