Shockley can add to legacy Saturday

ATHENS - When D.J. Shockley thinks about his Georgia career, it breaks down into three chapters.

“The whole waiting it out issue is a story on its own, making it to the SEC Championship is a story on its won, and if we go ahead and win it that’s a whole nother story,” the Bulldogs’ senior quarterback said. “I guess that could be a legacy.”

The key to Shockley’s legacy will be that last part. He’ll finish his Bulldog career after his only season as a starter with impressive statistics (56 percent completion percentage, 2,199 yards, 19 touchdowns, five interceptions as of now) and an impressive winning percentage (8-1 in his nine starts so far), but it’ll take a title for him to have a starring role in Georgia lore.

“If he wins the championship, he has to go down as one of the best,” Georgia quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo said. “I know it would be something very special for him if we can accomplish that with him being the quarterback.”

The thought of taking a spot alongside Eric Zeier, John Rauch, Fran Tarkenton and David Greene is a humbling thought for D.J. Shockley, he said. “When I have thought about it, it’s kind of crazy to be thought about with those guys who have been around here,” he said. “I really felt like I haven’t done enough to be looked at as one of those guys, as one of the great quarterbacks at the University of Georgia.”

He can take care of that Saturday, though.
