Dawgs over Tech: How they scored Premium Story

ATLANTA - Georgia beats Georgia Tech 14-7 - here's how they scored.

First Quarter

Key Play

Georgia was driving with a chance to take the lead when Bulldog quarterback D.J. Shockley was intercepted by Georgia Tech linebacker KaMichael Hall. The pass was tipped up by intended receiver Bryan McClendon and Hall made a diving catch on the Tech 12-yard line with 2:08 to play in the quarter.

Key Stat

The officials were busy in the first quarter with four replay challenges from the booth. Three of the challenges came in a seven-play span between 3:49 and 2:02 to play in the quarter and just one, a pass interference that originally went against Tech, was overturned. The on-field officials were from the Southeastern Conference and the replay officials were from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Man

Georgia’s backup running back Kregg Lumpkin entered the game on the Bulldogs’ second drive and was a spark plug. Lumpkin picked up 32 yards on four carries on the Bulldogs’ touchdown drive, which was capped by a 1-yard plunge by Brennan Southerland.

The Score

Tied 7-7

Second Quarter

Key Play

Brandon Coutu missed a 47-yard field goal wide left with 11:32 to play in the quarter. The field goal would have broken the 7-7 tie.

Key Stat

The Yellow Jackets had three consecutive plays resulting in negative yardage to kill a drive late in the third quarter. The Jackets had a second-and-1 from the UGA 8-yard line. A penalty negated an 8-yard run by P. J. Daniels and a sack and two penalties took Tech out of field goal position.

The Man

Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver intercepted a Reggie Ball pass on the UGA 10-yard line to kill a Jacket drive with 14 seconds left to play in the half. Oliver’s third interception of the year came on deep pass intended for Damarius Bilbo.

Tied 7-7

Third Quarter

Key Play

Georgia Tech negated a 30-yard punt return by Thomas Flowers punt return by making the Bulldogs go three-and-out. The Jackets stopped Shockley on a third-and-7 for four yards to force a punt.

Key Stat

Georgia managed just one first down on three second-half possessions. Tech had just four first downs.

The Man

Tech defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta mixed up blitz packages and didn’t allow Shockley much time to throw. The senior quarterback completed just two passes and was pressured by Gerris Wilkinson, Adamm Oliver and Eric Henderson.

The Score

Tied 7-7

Fourth Quarter

Key Play

Shockley found McClendon for a 19-yard touchdown with 3:18 to play in the game. McClendon, who had dropped a number of passes in the game, caught his first pass of the game over Tech cornerback Dennis Davis. Mario Raley also caught his first pass of the game, a 9-yard completion on third down for a first down, on the drive.

Key Stat

Reggie Ball's first interception on the game came on the most crucial play. After a pass interference call against Georgia, Tech had first down at the Bulldogs' 12-yard line. Tim Jennings jumped the route and picked the pass intended for Bilbo, returning to the Bulldogs' 32-yard line.

The Man

Georgia punt returner Thomas Flowers returned a punt 33 yards to the Tech 39-yard line with 5:26 to play to set up the Bulldogs' winning score. It was Flowers third punt return of 30-plus yards in the second half.
