Kentucky Week: Tuesday News and Notes

ATHENS - News and notes from Georgia's practices.

DEPLETED SECONDARY: Cornerback Tim Jennings (ankle) probably will play against Kentucky, Richt said, but may not be very effective. Safety Tra Battle (concussion) is a different story. Battle was hurt when he was accidently hit by 350-pound teammate Darrius Swain on a tackle.

“He hit me so hard, he got up and apologized,” Battle said.

Battle said he thinks he’ll know for sure by today whether or not he will play.

Jennings was at practice Tuesday wearing a green, no-contact jersey, but he only joggged on the sideline. Battle did not dress out for practice. Defensive tackle Kedric Golston (ankle), running back Danny Ware (knee) and fullback Brannan Southerland (shoulder) all practiced in green jerseys.

MAKING A CHANGE: The confusion that resulted in Georgia not being able to attempt a two-point conversion against Auburn won’t happen again, Richt promised Tuesday. The Bulldogs have changed their practice to make sure no kicking team steps on the field until it gets the go-ahead from a coach.

“Those guys got in the habit of running on the field for the extra point,” Richt said. Now, “first score of the game, six to nothing, doesn’t matter. They’re not going on the field until coach says get on the field. I failed as the head coach to make sure the procedure was proper.”

Offensive coordinator Neil Callaway is the coach responsible for sending the field goal and extra point teams on the field, place-kicker Brandon Coutu said.

“We just took it a little bit for granted,” Coutu said.

ROTATION NO MORE: It was clear that Georgia’s three-tackle rotation on the offensive line was dead when starters Daniel Inman and Dennis Roland played all 67 snaps of Saturday’s game against Auburn. The plan to rotate Ken Shackleford on an even basis with Inman and Roland was scrapped after the fourth game of the season, Callaway said.

“Shack and (Chester Adams) are doing good,” he said. “I wish I could play them more, but in a tight ball game...”

MORE MOVEMENT: Georgia probably isn’t going to change its starting receivers -- Bryan McClendon and Sean Bailey -- but its rotation is expected to change. Richt said Tuesday he wants to get A.J. Bryant, Mario Raley and T.J. Gartrell more chances in the offense.

“There are some guys we feel like we need to get out there and see what they can do,” Richt said.

EARLY MORNING: By the time you read this, the Bulldogs probably will have wrapped up today’s practice. Due to an academic conflict involving several players, Richt decided to practice the team from 5:15 to 7:15 this morning. The players were informed Monday, and it wasn’t a popular decision, Coutu said.

“I don’t know how much kicking I’ll be able to do that early,” he said. “I’ll still be asleep.”
