GOOD EXAMPLE: Richt knows what Joe Tereshinski is going through this week. Richt, who backed up Jim Kelly at Miami, was thrown into a game due to a Kelly injury against —who else? — the Florida Gators. The Hurricanes were losing when Richt entered the game, but he threw a 55-yard touchdown pass and a 10-yard pass to set up the game-winning field goal.

“The rest of the story is I completed only 2 of 13 passes that game,” he said.

Richt will not share with Tereshinski the story about the time he got into a game at Notre Dame. Richt didn’t think he was going to travel to that game, he said, and, as a result, “I wasn’t paying a whole lot of attention to what was going on.”

Not only did he make the trip, but he got in the game.

When the Irish brought a safety blitz, “I had no earthly idea what to do,” he said. He was sacked so hard on the play that he lost consciousness, he said.

“If I had paid attention, I might have hit my sight adjustment," he said, "and we would have beaten Notre Dame,” he said.

LINEBACKER SWITCH: Danny Verdun Wheeler will start at strongside linebacker this week, linebackers coach John Jancek said Wednesday. Verdun Wheeler will take the spot of Brandon Miller, who is the only Georgia linebacker to start every game so far this year. Miller will play but has been slowed all week by a sprained left ankle.

“I’ll be able to do something,” said Miller, who didn’t participate in scout team drills Wednesday.

Miller or Jamario Smith will back up Verdun Wheeler, depending on Miller’s health, Jancek said. Tony Taylor will start in the middle, and Jarvis Jackson will start on the weakside.

RETURN TRIP: Former Bulldog David Greene, the winningest quarterback in college football history, took advantage of the Seattle Seahawks’ off week to visit his former teammates Wednesday.

He didn’t offer any particular words of advice to quarterback Joe Tereshinski, he said.

“He’ll be fine,” Greene said. “You don’t really have to win the game, you just have to manage it. I mean, we’ve got a great team. As long as Joe doesn’t try to do too much, which he won’t, he’ll be fine.”

Greene will be on the sideline during Saturday’s game.
