Dawgs top Mississippi State 23-10

STARKVILLE - Georgia wins the battle of the Bulldogs.

First quarter

Key stat: The two teams combined for 210 yards of offense in the first quarter. Georgia had most of it with 130, including 124 through the air.

Key moment: Bulldog running back Danny Ware somehow slipped behind every Mississippi State defender with 8:49 left in the quarter and was wide open in the end zone to catch his second touchdown pass of the season. Quarterback D.J. Shockley first looked to scramble on the play but then spotted Ware and lofted the scoring pass.

The man: Shockley, who was 7-for-7 passing in the first 15 minutes. He piled up 124 yards and one touchdown during that time.

Score: Georgia 7, Mississippi State 3

Second quarter

Key stat: Mississippi State lost 3 yards on their 14 offensive plays in the quarter after gaining 80 in the first quarter.

Key moment: Shockley completed a 14-yard pass across the middle to Kenneth Harris to convert a third-and-6 late in the quarter. The conversion allowed the Bulldogs to get their second touchdown two plays later.

The man: Georgia defensive end Quentin Moses took the team lead for sacks all by himself by bringing down Omarr Conner two times, once for a loss of 7 yards and again for a loss of 4. At halftime, he had four sacks on the season.

Score: Georgia 14, Mississippi State 3

Third quarter

Key moment: o Shockley found tight end Leonard Pope for a 34-yard gain on fourth-and-5 midway through the quarter to set up Georgia at Mississippi State’s 1-yard line. However, UGA didn’t take full advantage, getting only a field goal out of the possession after State stuffed two straight goal line runs and Georgia committed a third-down penalty.

Key stat: o Georgia had 137 yards as the offense returned to its first-quarter form, however, it got only six points out of the quarter.

The man: o Georgia’s tight end position. Pope and Martrez Milner each caught at least one pass for a gain for more than 20 yards and a key first down.

The score: o Georgia 20-3.

Fourth quarter

Key moment: o When Conner found tight end Eric Butler for a 4-yard scoring pass with 7:18 left in the game and gave the few thousand fans left in the stadium something to cheer about.

Key stat: o Mississippi State gained 69 yards on a five-play scoring drive midway through the quarter. That was 28 more yards than it gained in the second and third quarters combined.

The man: o Conner, despite being beaten and battered all night long, never lost his composure or his fight. With fewer than 10 minutes left in the game, he completed a 44-yard pass to tight end Butler, a 30-yarder to Joey Sanders and the touchdown to Butler, more than doubling his yardage total for the game.

The score: o Georgia 23-10.
