UGA, Miss. State no strangers

ATHENS — For teams that have only played 19 times ever and not once in seven seasons, Georgia and Mississippi State have plenty of familiarity.

Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jackson and Mississippi State safety Jeramie Johnson were teammates at Atlanta’s Washington High School and talk once a week, according to Johnson.

“He always says what they’re going to do to us and I always say we’ll see,” Johnson said. “He starts talking and I just say, ‘Y’all better bring it.’ There’s a little more motivation this week because some of my home boys play for Georgia.”

Jackson and Johnson talked Monday night, Jackson said, and Jackson admitted there was some trash talking, particularly when Johnson put All-SEC running back Jerious Norwood on the phone.

“It’s all in fun,” Jackson said. “I know they’re going to come out and play us hard.”

Those two aren’t the only ones burning up the phone lines this week. Georgia freshman Jeff Owens and Mississippi State linebacker Jamar Chaney, who originally planned to play in Athens, talk twice a week, Chaney said.

“He’s one of my best friends,” Owens said. “There’s a lot of trash talk. I talked to him (Tuesday) night and the night before that. He’s saying they’re working hard and preparing for us and I said we’re doing the same.”

Owens and Chaney, who grew up about 30 minutes apart in south Florida, made their official recruiting visits to Georgia on the same weekend.

“I know when I get home, he’s going to be at my house,” Owens said. “As soon as I get home for Christmas, I know we’re going to be together so I have to whup him up on the field this week.”
