20 First Downs…
Last season when Boise State’s offense was held to less than 20 first downs in a game, they struggled to win each game. Against BYU, Boise State had only 19 first downs and won by one point. Against Fresno State, the Broncos had only 19 first downs and held on to win. In their only loss of the season, Boise State managed only 15 first downs and fell to Louisville in the Liberty Bowl.
Since Dan Hawkins took over the Bronco program in 2001, Boise State has struggled to win while scoring less than 25 points. The Broncos are 1-5 while scoring under 25 points with two of the losses coming to SEC schools – Arkansas and South Carolina.
If the Bulldogs can force five punts or more Boise State will struggle. Boise State’s three closest games, a loss to Louisville, an overtime win against San Jose State and a one-point win over BYU were also games where punter Kyle Stringer punted five or more times.
Since the SEC expanded to 12 teams in 1992, Georgia is 10-0 when scoring at least 28 points in a contest. However, the Bulldogs are 1-2 in opening games when scoring less than 28.
11th or worse
The Bulldogs are a mediocre 5-6-1 all time when opening the season against a team ranked in the AP’s top 25 – Boise State is ranked 18th in this week’s poll. However, the Bulldogs are a perfect 4-0 in season openers against teams ranked, but not in the AP top ten.
