A.J. Bryant, Kenneth Harris and T.J. Gartrell all are still in contention for the team’s third wide receiver position, and Mario Raley is close to getting into that group, Richt said. All of the receivers have turned up their play since Richt publicly chastised them two weeks ago for dropping too many passes. There was only one drop in Thursday’s scrimmage, he said.
“I haven’t been miffed by that at all lately, so they must be catching it pretty good,” he said.
CAPTAINS NAMED: The Bulldogs have announced their captains for the first game. Shockley and Dennis Roland will represent the offense, Gerald Anderson will represent the defense and DeMario Minter the special teams. Georgia’s coaches select captains each week.
HIGH REGARD: Despite not playing since the 2003 season, linebacker Tony Taylor is one of the 65 players in the nation to be named this week to the watch list for the Butkus Award. Taylor, a junior, started 12 of 13 games in 2003 and made 82 tackles from his outside linebacker position.
He will play middle linebacker this season after missing all of 2004 due to a torn ACL. The Butkus Award, named for NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus, is given to the nation’s top linebacker by Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Fla. Ten semifinalists will be named on Oct. 20.
