ATHENS — In the final scrimmage of the preseason Thursday, Georgia quarterback D.J. Shockley seemingly put to rest any lingering issues about his readiness for the 2005 season.

“Shockley was very sharp,” Coach Mark Richt said. “Every ball was right on the money. He’s throwing it really well, really well.”

Shockley’s accuracy wasn’t that good this spring, quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo said, but that has changed this fall.

“His accuracy has improved tremendously this camp,” Bobo said. “I think that’s just because he has relaxed some.”

Shockley threw touchdown passes to fullback Brannan Southerland and wide receiver Bryan McClendon as the Bulldogs worked out Thursday evening at Sanford Stadium. The offense, which worked against the scout team defense, also scored on runs by Tyson Browning and Southerland and a touchdown pass from Joe Tereshinski to Sean Bailey.

“We know it’s not going to be that easy in the game, but it’s a positive note going into next week,” Shockley said.

The senior acknowledged he had accuracy issues this spring but is much more confident now, he said.

“I think it’s just from more focus on my part,” he said.

D.J. hockley wasn’t the only one to have a big day. Tailback Kregg Lumpkin had nearly 100 yards rushing in one quarter, Richt said. Lumpkin got the most work of all the tailbacks because he missed some of fall camp due to a knee injury.

“Offensively, there were no (depth chart) changes,” Richt said, “although all the running backs had a nice scrimmage.”

Lumpkin is the third-team tailback behind Thomas Brown and Danny Ware.

Defensively, Jeff Owens recovered a fumble, Quentin Moses had a sack and Tony Taylor had an interception, Richt said.

Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (shoulder) was held out of the scrimmage.
