2005 Fall Camp: Day 16 News and notes Premium Story

ATHENS - News and notes from Georgia's 16th practice day of fall camp.

SECONDARY CONCERNS: After some earlier shuffling, freshman Bryan Evans has found a home at cornerback, and freshman Donavon Baldwin is at safety, Martinez said.

END AROUND: Coach Mark Richt has mentioned that several true freshmen are still “on the bubble” in terms of whether they play this year or redshirt. Defensive end Rod Battle is one of those players, but it looks like Battle is on the right side of the bubble.

“It was rough, but I think I’m getting comfortable now,” Battle said.

Battle said he is working with the third team now, but he has gotten some second team reps. The top three end spots seem set with starters Will Thompson and Quentin Moses and reserve Charles Johnson, but there is a place for a fourth end in the rotation now that Ray Gant is being used at tackle more than end.

Battle was considered one of the top 15 defensive ends in the country by Scout.com when he came out of Douglass High School.

SO FAR, SO GOOD: Kregg Lumpkin’s surgically repaired knee is holding up well after almost a week of full contact.

“I don’t see any difference between him and any other backs,” Richt said. “I don’t know how that knee actually feels, but he doesn’t seem to be struggling with his conditioning any more than anybody else.”

Lumpkin said, “It gets stiff every now and then but that’s about it.”
