2005 Fall Camp: Day 8 News and notes

ATHENS - News and notes from Georgia's eighth day of fall camp.

THUMBS UP/DOWN: The Southeastern Conference used the scrimmage to test its replay system, but didn't provide any officials to comment on how it went.

Richt said two plays were reviewed. One was on fumble in the end zone by the No. 2 offense recovered by the defense. Another was on a long catch-and-run down the sideline where the receiver suddenly cut back to the middle, and the play was reviewed to see if he stepped out when he cut.

Richt said the officials were right on both calls and there were no reversals. He again expressed concern on the length reviews might take.

"It took a little bit (of time). It wasn't as long as a TV timeout. It might be (a disruption) if you had many more than two a game, especially when you have TV timeouts."

INJURY UPDATE: Other than linebacker Jamario Smith leaving early with cramps, the Bulldogs escaped the scrimmage with no new injuries,

Good thing.

Among those who didn't participate in the afternoon scrimmage: offensive lineman Nick Jones (ankle), defensive lineman Gerald Anderson (sprained knee), safety Greg Blue (hamstring), linebacker Tony Taylor (hamstring), tailback Kregg Lumpkin (knee), guard Josh Brock (concussion), linebacker Danny Verdun-Wheeler (ankle).

The list of players not cleared for full contact remained the same: tailback Kregg Lumpkin, linebacker Jarvis Jackson.

Still out indefinitely: wideout A.J. Bryant (shoulder) and safety Antonio Sims (leg). And done for the year: offensive lineman Bartley Miller (shoulder) and fullback Des Williams (chest muscle).

WATCHING WEATHER: Exactly three weeks from the scheduled kickoff, it was 87 degrees in Athens. Humidity was 61 percent, and the Weather Channel's Web site said it "felt" like 94, a figure of which anybody inside Sanford Stadium would vociferously dispute.

In Boise at the same time, it was 84, felt like 80, with 17 percent humidity.

COMING UP: The Bulldogs have only one practice session Saturday, but they'll be on the practice fields for two hours in the afternoon for fan Picture Day.

Players and coaches will be available from 1-3 p.m. on the Woodruff practice fields.

The defense will be on on field, offense on another. Games, concessions, and merchandize will occupy the artificial turf fields.

Uga VI will be pawing and taking pictures in the Stegeman Coliseum hospitality room under the main scoreboard from 1-3 p.m.

Fans may bring only one item to sign.

Tickets will be provided to stand in line for Mark Richt, who will greet at least 250 fans. A similar setup is planned for Uga, who will pose with at least 120 groups for pictures.

QUOTABLE: "The stadium always brings a little more because you’re in the surroundings of the stadium and in actual game situations. The whole atmosphere of Sanford Stadium adds to it, even when there's nobody in it. It's gonna add a little emotion to it."
