2005 Fall Camp: Day 5 News and notes Premium Story

Posted Aug 10, 2005

ATHENS - News and notes from Georgia's fifth day of fall camp.

HEALTH WATCH: Linebacker Tony Taylor wasn't quite 100 percent with a tight hamstring.

"Just fatigued to the point where it's time to give him a little bit of a blow," Richt said. "You never know with hamstrings."

Freshman wideout Mohamed Massaquoi suffered a pulled hamstring Tuesday and will be out about a week. Richt said Taylor would likely be back today.

PRACTICE UPDATE: The weather - hot, muggy, cloudy and misty - would make a four-legged bulldog a little slow, and it was no different for the human version Wednesday.

"It started out real lethargic, I would have to say. Sticky as the weather. When we went 11 on 11 and got after each other full speed, everything livened up to game tempo. Before that, I was a little disappointed in the energy level."

Richt said film will show that a fair number of players went hard throughout the session.

"I guess I can't always expect 'em to be fired up about practice,” he said, “when there's another 24 to go." Georgia will hold its first two-a-day session today with another one Saturday, the Bulldogs planning to scrimmage in the afternoon.

MEMORY LANE: Entering the first day in pads this year, Georgia has lost one player for the season: offensive tackle Bartley Miller (recurring shoulder problems) and have lost freshman safety Antonio Sims (broken leg) for six to eight weeks. A year ago at this time, Miller was out and then done for the year with the same issues, and Lumpkin was done after the first day.

LUMPKIN READY: Richt said the staff would make a decision Wednesday night about which practice to unleash tailback Kregg Lumpkin. Lumpkin missed all of last year after suffering a torn ACL on the first day of practice. As a freshman, he ran for 523 yards, averaging 4.7 yards a carry. He went through spring practice with no contact. "My guess would be the pads practice in the morning," Richt said.

QUOTABLE: "Everytime you hear the ones' (are) up, you know that's you." Said Georgia quarterback D.J. Shockley on the main difference for him at practice, that he's the guy behind center when coaches call for the first team.
