O-line no longer a question mark

ATHENS – It wasn’t that long ago that the offensive line was considered Georgia’s number one question mark.

That’s certainly not the case any more. Offensive coordinator and line coach Neil Callaway thinks the depth the Dawgs have developed over the last few seasons will finally pay off this season.

“The depth on the offensive line is good. It is very critical that we come out of this camp and establish who the starters are, which I think we have a pretty good idea of already, and then identify the pecking order,” said Callaway.

The Bulldogs’ offensive line features perhaps the best guard in the country in Max Jean-Gilles.

He is very optimistic about the line’s chances this season.

“We have great chemistry on the offensive line. Everyone is competing and working hard every day. A few years ago we struggled but now we are striving to be one of the top five offensive lines in the nation,” said Jean-Gilles, who returned to Georgia for his senior season.

“Hopefully we’ll have guys competing throughout camp because that will make us better,” said Callaway.

Jean-Gilles, Dennis Roland, Russ Tanner, Dennis Roland and Nick Jones go into camp as the starters, but they’ll have their playing time pushed by their backups. Former starters Josh Brock and Bartley Miller give the Dawgs tremendous depth at guard, and Ryan Schnetzer will come close to splitting time with Tanner at center.

“I think the depth and the competition will be good for the just plain competition part of it, but it will be good in terms of injuries, too. It’s hard to go through the course of a year without having some injuries – hopefully we’ll have enough depth to combat that,” Callaway said.
