HOOVER – Here’s a look at the day South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks had at the SEC’s annual Media Day event.

Last season: 6-5

Last game vs. Georgia: 20-16 loss

Series Record: Georgia leads 42-13-2

Most memorable Georgia win: 1980 – Herschel Walker and the Bulldogs best eventual Heisman Trophy winner George Rodgers and South Carolina.

Most painful Georgia loss: 2000 – With all the hype in the world behind their backs, Georgia – and what’s supposed to be their Heisman candidate – lose 21-10 in one of the biggest upsets of the year. Quincy Carter throws five interceptions to help the Gamecocks’ cause.

Starters returning: 16

Best player: Ko Simpson

Biggest Weakness: Quarterback

2005’s big question: Can Spurrier have a winning season in 2005?

Inside the numbers vs. Georgia (as seen in the upcoming Dawg Post 2005 Season Preview):

93

Since South Carolina entered the SEC in 1992, the Gamecocks have beaten Georgia four times (1993, 1996, 2000 and 2001). South Carolina has had a 100-yard rusher in two of the four contests, and one that was very close. Brandon Bennett (108 yards in 1993), Duce Staley (170 yards in 1996), and Derrick Watson (93 in 2000) all rushed for at least 93 yards against the Dawgs in three of Carolina’s four conference wins against Georgia. Watson actually ran for more than 100 yards, but lost some yardage on plays, and that knocked him below the 100-yard mark. The strangest loss came in 2001 when Watson was held to less than 40 yards rushing, but set up a Gamecock touchdown with an 80-yard kick return to open the game.

SEC Media Day’s quotes to note:

“I miss you guys – even the ones that wrote bad things about me.” – South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier on the media.

“The fans have been wonderful to their team and their team has not been real good back.” – Spurrier on South Carolina’s history of great fans.

“Until we start beating anybody no one is going to be concerned with us.” – Spurrier on the reception of the SEC coaches.

“You could have asked me that at Florida in 1990 and I wouldn’t have had an answer for that.” – Spurrier on South Carolina’s lack of a winning tradition.

“Both schools were under investigation.” – Spurrier on what South Carolina and Florida had in common when he took over both programs.

“In college football the head coach is the head coach – that’s not the case in the NFL.” – Spurrier on the difference between college football and the NFL.

“Yeah, we haven’t talked about that too much. We don’t’ believe in that too much. The Red Sox won and they got rid of their curse.” – Spurrier on the “Chicken Curse.”

“My job is not to promote the other coaches in the SEC – y’all can do that.” – Spurrier dodging a question about current Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer.

“My whole thing about a playoff has changed because I don’t think we (South Carolina) have to worry about it right now.” – Spurrier on a college football playoff of which he has been a supporter in the past.
