ATHENS – Georgia almost lost a fourth freshman football player.

Incoming safety Antavious Coates, who already has enrolled in school, suffered a sprained knee last week during the Bulldogs’ summer workout program. The injury will keep him out of the rest of summer drills, but he said Thursday he expects to be full speed in time for fall practice.

“I’m all right,” he said. “I just sprained my knee.”

He was worried at first, though. Coates’ senior season at Greenwood High School in Greenwood, S.C., was cut short after five games due to a torn ACL in the same knee he sprained last week. At first he feared he had torn the ligament again, he said.

Coates was a candidate for early playing time because of his resume and Georgia’s need for depth in the secondary. He was ranked the 22nd-best safety in the country by last year and was widely considered one of top players in South Carolina.

If Coates is out for the year, he would become the fourth player from the Bulldogs’ 19-man signing class to be lost for at least this season. Linebacker Darius Dewberry and defensive lineman Brandon Sesay failed to meet NCAA academic standards, and linebacker Jamar Chaney was denied by the university’s admissions office because his SAT score was questioned.
