Spring Practice Countdown: Defensive ends

Each year spring practice is the best indication of the depth, starters, and players at each position on the team. Even with Georgia’s personnel losses due to graduation and the NFL, the Bulldogs are strong at many positions, and defensive end is one of them. Like the rest of the defensive line, it is one of the strengths of the Bulldogs going into this spring, even with the departure of three-time All-American David Pollack to the NFL.

2004 Starter: David Pollack

No one player will replace David Pollack – that’s not possible. Quentin Moses (1 career start, 30 total tackles, 8.5 sacks), however, is the starter of the future at this defensive end spot. Fast, tall, and powerful, Moses could be the best rusher on the team in 2005. Jeremy Lomax could get a few looks this spring – but it's hard to know exactly where he will line up by the end of practice although right now he is listed behind Moses. Lomax is a slender 210 and will have to rely on speed to get the job done. Steve White provides depth at the position.

2004 Starter: Will Thompson (24 career starts, 81 total tackles, 9.5 sacks, 1 interception)

Thompson started most of the 2004 season, but was beaten out by Moses just before the Outback Bowl. Thompson will return for a sixth season because the NCAA granted him a medical hardship. Charles Johnson (0 career starts, 6 total tackles, 1 sack, 1 caused fumble) will backup Thompson along with injured defensive end Marcus Jackson (1 career start, 5 total tackles). Johnson was a prize recruit in 2004 and showed some signs of good play, particularly late in the season. He got good pressure on the quarterback and had a couple of tackles for a loss in 2004, too. Jackson will workout this spring, but in a limited role. His fate as a Bulldog will be in the hands of the doctors, and the decision regarding his condition will likely come later in the month.
