Crump causes matchup problem for Dawgs

ATHENS – Georgia’s unimpressive showing against Stetson probably took all the momentum out a run they were hoping to extend into the New Year. With the SEC schedule starting tonight in Athens against Tennessee, the Bulldogs need to find a way to get rolling again.

The Vols are a mediocre SEC team at best, and this is one game the Bulldogs need if they want to have a half-way respectable record at the end of the season. The Vols, who split last season’s games with Georgia, are a woeful 7-5 and need to get wins anywhere they can in the conference themselves.

Dennis Felton, who has already pulled a few rabbits out of his hat already this season, got a little luck when the SEC schedule came out in the fall. The Bulldogs start the conference schedule at home for only the fourth time in the last 14 years. Georgia is 3-0 in those contests.

The red and black crowd will not help the Dawgs in terms of their matchups, however, as the Vols have an unquestionable experience and size advantage over the Dawgs. Brandon Crump has given Georgia nightmares for the last three seasons and tonight should be no different.

A 6-10 senior, Crump will matchup with Dave Bliss, who is also 6-10, but very inconsistent and is prone to foul trouble. Georgia’s best chance to win the game is for Bliss to keep Crump from having a 20-point night. Without Bliss, Georgia’s next tallest big men that play regularly are Steve Newman and Corey Gibbs, both of whom are giving at least two inches and ten pounds to Crump.

Crump will likely force Felton to use a zone against the Vols so that Bliss and others will get help against the Vols’ big man. If Tennessee hits shots Georgia will be in for a very long night and the Stegeman Crowd will get a good view of things to come for the next three months.

PREDICTION

Tennessee 69
Georgia 65
