LEXINGTON, Ky. - David Greene didn't even have to work a full day to become the winningest Division I-A quarterback ever.

David Greene started his 40th victory Saturday in a 62-17 win over Kentucky in front of 63,110 fans in Commonwealth Stadium. He didn't have to finish it.

"It feels great," said Greene. "Obviously, it's a team stat. I feel very blessed to be able to get a chance to start here for four years. That was not just for this team. It was for the guys four years ago, too."

Greene entered the game tied with former Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning for the most career Division I-A wins by a quarterback with 39. He broke the tie in his typical fashion, with an efficient day that ended without spectacular numbers but with a win.

Greene was 11 of 16 for 220 yards and one touchdown after the first series of the second half, and it looked like his day was done since the Bulldogs were up 27-3. Backup D.J. Shockley played the next two series, but Greene re-entered the game after the Wildcats scored two quick touchdowns.

He returned with two minutes left in the third quarter and led a 71-yard touchdown drive to put Georgia up 41-17 with 13:44 to go. That ended his day at 14 of 19 overall for 259 yards and the one touchdown, a 1-yard pass to Leonard Pope in the second quarter.

"He deserves the record," receiver Fred Gibson said. "He's done a lot for this university. That's a big-time record right there."

Greene, who improved to 15-1 on an opponent's home field, broke several other records, too. He set the SEC record for most consecutive pass attempts without an interception at 206. He now has 16 touchdowns and one interception this year. He also threw his 68th career touchdown pass, breaking a tie with Eric Zeier to give him the school record. And, he set the school record for offensive plays, with 1,568 in his career. He's second in SEC history in that category.

Greene is now 40-9 in his career.

"I think he's one of the best guys I've ever coached," Richt said. "He's one of the main reasons Georgia is where it is."
