08 09 2004 News and Notes
Mark Richt's Georgia team went through 21 phases of practice, and ended with a conditioning drill for their first practice of the season. Several events happened at today's practice. Here are a few notes: Odell Thurman's suspension resulted in Derrick White moving into the number one middle linebacker spot. White struggled at times to catch the ball during interception drills. He got a lot of support from his teammates, including an injured Tony Taylor. Brian VanGorder, who has not yet reached an agreement of terms as it relates to his contract, worked with Brandon Miller, Brannan Southerland, Derrick White, and Josh Johnson extensively at today's workout. Cedric Haywood and Bartley Miller are not practicing with the team, but both went through workouts of their own today. Miller was in the weight room most of practice, while Haywood worked out on the turf fields. The offensive line was missing one of its newest additions. Chester Adams sat out of today's practice. A bigger Seth Watts was the only newcomer on the offensive line today. The turf fields caused many players' shoes to slip off during practice. Thomas Flowers made an outstanding defensive play against Reggie Brown in the endzone. Flowers broke up what would have been a 40-yard touchdown throw at the last second. Leonard Pope and Martrez Milner shared many of the first string snaps today at tight end. Milner is the number one at tight end, but the two are expected to share the bulk of the time at the position. Michael Turner, who has played at tight end as well as center, also got a look today at offensive guard. Turner might get some playing time there if depth at the position does not improve.
