What we learned from Spring: Nose Guard

Georgia spring practice concluded with its annual G-Day game . Here is a look at the Nose Guards:

Gerald Anderson was not nearly as heralded as his high school teammate Fred Gibson. But right now Anderson, more so than Gibson, is the one that is opening eyes with his play.

Anderson gave his typical workman-like performances in practices and during the annual G-Day game. Anderson does not have a lot of depth behind him so it’s important that he does not get hurt during the early part of the year.

Anderson is one half of one the most potent interior defensive lines in the SEC along with defensive tackle Kedric Golston. Anderson and Golston will be looked at to provide the run stopping that Georgia needs in order to continue the dominant defense that they have had in the last few seasons. Both have been praised for their work ethic as well as their toughness (and considering that praise has come from Rodney Garner, they must be doing something right). They will play vital roles in helping Georgia make a title run in 2004.

Dale Dixson walked out of spring practice as the number two nose guard. He was making strides last season before he was hurt during August practice. Georgia needs Dixson to fulfill his potential this fall so that a ton of pressure is not put on Anderson to play too many downs.

Key to this position:

Anderson can not get hurt. The lack of depth on the defensive line is frightening.

Depth chart shuffle:

Darrell Holmes will no longer play at Georgia due to a chronic shoulder injury. His departure moves Dixson and walk-on Jeff Williams up one notch each on the depth chart. Neither will challenge Anderson for the starting role.

2004 Prediction:

Anderson will be an All-SEC candidate but will be overshadowed by not only Golston but also Georgia’s talented linebackers in terms of being the team’s best run stopper.
