Holmes' Career at Georgia is Over

ATHENS - Reserve defensive tackle Darrell Holmes has joined Georgia's lengthy list of medical disqualifications.
The junior out of Crim High School in Atlanta had to give up football due to a chronic shoulder injury, Coach
Mark Richt
said. That leaves the Bulldogs with just five defensive tackles.
"Which isn't a lot," Richt said. "I'm not comfortable with the situation."
Kedric Golston
and
Gerald Anderson
will start for
Georgia
, but
Marquis Elmore
,
Ray Gant
and
Dale Dixson
are the only backups now. Gant, the only one of that trio with any worthwhile experience, can't practice this spring due to a shoulder injury.
The Bulldogs will consider a position change to help add depth, but there are no ideal candidates, Richt said. Georgia recently moved
Darrius Swain
from defensive tackle to offensive guard. He could move back, but he has done well on the offensive line and he never flourished on the defensive line. None of the team's incoming freshmen are candidates for a move, Richt said.
"I really don't know the answer," he said. "Right now you're just trying to get through spring, but you've got to look at it and figure a way to cross train some guys."
Cordele native
Preston Pannell
, safety
Derrick Holloway
, running back
Ronnie Powell
and offensive linemen
Reggie Weeks
and
Tommy Gainous
have already taken medical disqualifications. Under the system, the players are allowed to remain on scholarship but do not count against Georgia's maximum number of 85. They can not play college football again.
