The Eagles (9-12) took a brief 1-0 lead in the second. Flint Wipke lined a two-out double off Georgia starter David Timm. Then, left fielder Mike Economos' base hit scored Wipke. Georgia (13-3) answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame, thanks in part to an error by first baseman Greg Dowling with the bases loaded that allowed three runs to score. Bobby Felmy bounced a ball to Downling and it went under his glove and down the right field line.
The Eagles drew back to within one, scoring two runs in the fourth and chasing Timm as the Bulldogs turned to redshirt freshman Josh McLaughlin. With two on and one out, McLaughlin struck out Cam Caldwell, and after a walk to Logan Phillips, he got James Payne to ground out to end the threat.
The Bulldogs got one run back in their half of the inning as Kyle Keen singled, stole second and third and then scored on a base hit by freshman Adam McDaniel to make it 5-3. Georgia had a season-high six stolen bases on the night. The Eagles made it a one-run game again in the top of the fifth on a couple of infield hits and a walk before Dowling scored on a fielder's choice by Economos.
Georgia extended its lead with a four-run outburst in the seventh, highlighted by Morris' three-run blast off GSU reliever Jared Comstock. Senior shortstop Justin Holmes (2-for-2) led off the inning with a triple and then junior Josh Smith brought him home with a one-out double. Marshall Szabo (2-for-4) reached on a bunt single to bring Morris to the plate. He fought off severall 2-2 pitches before depositing a fastball over the left field fence for his team-leading eighth home run.
McLaughlin notched the win, pitching 1.2 innnings with three strikeouts while GSU starter John Carroll dropped to 1-3. The right-hander allowed five runs (only one earned) on four hits through the first five innings. Georgia's Will Startup and Mitchell Boggs pitched two scoreless innings apiece to preserve the Bulldog victory.
The Bulldogs wrap up the two-game series with the Eagles Wednesday with a 4 p.m. start.
