Diamond Dawgs sweep first 2 series
Posted Feb 18, 2004
The Diamond Dawgs continued their perfect start to the season by taking out East Tennessee State 7-0
The Diamond Dawgs returned to action on Wednesday afternoon for the finale of a two game series with East Tennessee State. Both teams had a relatively uneventful beginning to the game as they split 5 hits between them, and went scoreless for the first 4.5 innings.
That all changed in the bottom of the 5th when
loaded the bases with nobody out, and got a sacrifice fly to centerfield by freshman Joey Side to plate sophomore Jason Jacobs for the first run of the game. During the following at bat, freshman Brandon Masters was caught trying to steal 2nd, and senior Justin Holmes grounded out to 3rd to end the threat.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, the Dawgs added some insurance when freshman Josh Morris doubled through the right side, and Jason Jacobs added his 2nd hit of the game to drive home Morris and put Georgia up 2-0. UGA then put runners at the corners with 2 outs and got a clutch single by Justin Holmes to bring in senior Marshall Szabo and give the home team a 3-0 advantage.
In the 8th, Georgia went right back to work as senior Josh Smith doubled to right, and the increasingly dangerous Morris was intentionally walked. Pinch hitter Ryan Pittmon slapped one to short that was booted, allowing Smith to score, and putting the Bulldogs up 4. Then Marshall Szabo doubled to right scoring Morris, and Pittmon came home on a wild pitch during the following at bat to give UGA a 6 run lead. Clint Sammons concluded the scoring in the inning when he sac flied to right and scored Szabo from 3rd.
Sophomore Bo Lanier got the win for Georgia after going 3 innings in relief of sophomore starter Rip Warren. Four Bulldog pitchers combined on the 7 hit shutout of the Buccaneers on Wednesday.
Georgia returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Statesboro to begin a two game set with Georgia Southern.
-- With Georgia’s 2 game sweep of the Buccaneers, they pushed their all-time record against ETSU to 9-0
-- This was the first time in the Dawgs initial five games that they have failed to score in double figures
-- Josh Morris cooled off a bit from his torrid pace to begin the year, but still went 1 for 3 and afternoon and scored 2 runs
-- Bulldog hurlers struck out double digit batters for the 2nd time this year by mowing down 10 Bucs on Wednesday afternoon
-- DH Jason Jacobs and 2B Marshall Szabo led the offense by combining for 4 of the Dawgs 10 hits
