Southern Football rankings

Yep, its back again this year. Dean Legge looks at the 23 schools in the South. <p> This week is kind of big.

23. North Carolina – worst team in the South; but East Carolina is awful.

Straight up: East Carolina

Points: take North Carolina (-8.5)

Move: none

22. Vanderbilt – It's gotten pretty bad when you lose to Mississippi State. Still, I have faith that they will beat up Navy.

Straight up: Vanderbilt

Points: take Vanderbilt (-5.5)

Move: - 2

21. Duke – No game and the Blue Devils move up a spot. Maybe they should take more weeks off.

Straight up: Maryland

Points: take Maryland (-28)

Move: + 1

20. Mississippi State – Memphis is another winnable game for the Maroon Dogs.

Straight up: Mississippi State

Points: take Memphis (+5)

Move: + 1

19. Kentucky – The Cats can turn their season around with a win over the Cocks; but they won't.

Straight up: South Carolina

Points: take South Carolina (-7.5)

Move: -1

18. Florida – My how the mighty have fallen. The Gators might lose 4 games in a row by the time they get back from Jacksonville.

Straight up: LSU

Points: take LSU (-9.5)

Move: -3

17. NC State – National title talk earlier this year was ridiculously premature.

Straight up: NC State

Points: OFF

Move: -7 (Mover of the week)

16. Alabama – Dawgs took the Tide to the cleaners. Bama needs a win over Southern Mississippi and that won't be easy.

Straight up: Alabama

Points: OFF

Move: -2

15. South Carolina – Kentucky is in Carolina's way in terms of being 3rd place for the SEC East. They should perform in Columbia. If they don't I have to start wondering again about Holtz's team's future.

Straight up: South Carolina

Points: take South Carolina (-7.5)

Move: -2

14. Clemson – The Tigers need to get a win this week against Virginia. If they lose then they will be knocked out of the ACC race. Tommy Bowden's job is on the line in the month of October.

Straight up: Virginia

Points: take Clemson (+2.5)

Move: -3

13. Georgia Tech – No one can figure this Georgia Tech team out but Wake will try this weekend.

Straight up: Wake Forest

Points: take Wake Forest (-4)

Move: +6

12. Ole Miss – The Rebels are in 1st place in the SEC West along with 3 other teams. Arkansas State should be no challenge, but the points are too much.

Straight up: Ole Miss

Points: take Arkansas State (+25.5)

Move: +5

11. Wake Forest – The ACC title is Wake Forest's goal. Georgia Tech should not get in their way at home.

Straight up: Wake Forest

Points: take Wake Forest (-4)

Move: +1

10. Auburn – The Tiger's big win over Tennessee was critical in their SEC championship race. But we will see how serious their hopes are this weekend in Fayetteville. Auburn will lose this game, but will be in the SEC West race for the rest of the season. The Tigers are back.

Straight up: Arkansas

Points: take Arkansas (-6)

Move: +6

9. Maryland – Duke is a cupcake.

Straight up: Maryland

Points: take Maryland (-28)

Move: none

8. Virginia – Clemson could be an upset watch for the Virginia this week. The Tigers are at home and have not played very well against their rivals to the north. If Charlie Whitehurst can get a little protection Clemson can win.

Straight up: Virginia

Points: take Clemson (+2.5)

Move: none

7. Tennessee – This is Tennessee's game of the year. The schedule is downhill from here in the conference. If they can't beat Georgia for all of the marbles in Knoxville they can't win and don't deserve to win the SEC.

Straight up: Georgia

Points: take Georgia (-2)

Move: -2

6. Georgia – This is Georgia's game of the year. The whole season comes down to this weekend's ESPN2 match up (Why is this game relegated to ESPN2?). Georgia has had success recently against the Vols and Tennessee is not playing very well right now. Georgia is my pick.

Straight up: Georgia

Points: take Georgia (-2)

Move: +1

5. Arkansas – The Hogs gear up for one of 3 gigantic games in the SEC West this year. I think that Arkansas will win, but I could be wrong.

Straight up: Arkansas

Points: take Arkansas (-6)

Move: +1

4. Florida State – Should the Noles win against Miami this weekend they will move up to #2 in this poll. Its time that Florida State beats Miami; lets not let this game come down to a field goal. I think that we know what happens next.

Straight up: Florida State

Points: take Florida State (-5)

Move: none

3. Virginia Tech – Another cupcake in Syracuse.

Straight up: Virginia Tech

Points: take Virginia Tech (-19)

Move: none

2. Miami – Not looking real good going into the huge game with Florida State. I think that Florida State wins because this game is in Tallahassee.

Straight up: Florida State

Points: take Florida State (-5)

Move: -1

1. LSU – Suddenly the best team in the South, the Tigers will probably drill, and therefore easily cover, against the Gators. LSU's schedule is not unbelievably hard but good LSU team have screwed it up before. I don't think that they lose until they play either Arkansas or in the SEC title game and maybe not then either.

Straight up: LSU

Points: take LSU (-9.5)

Move: +1
