Jones Commits to Dawgs

Georgia's start to Signing Day week has already gotten off to a very good start.

Over the weekend Merritt Island (Fla.) DB Shaquille Jones committed to the Bulldogs, according to a report in the Athens Banner-Herald.

Jones had been committed to Louisville as week ago, and was committed to new Georgia linebackers coach Kevin Kevin Sherrer while he was the defensive coordinator at South Alabama.

Of course this argument goes back to the notion that two of Georgia’s most successful players of the early part of the Mark Richt era, Tim Jennings and Thomas Davis, were two-star recruits.

The commitment gives the Bulldogs 19 for the year, but it remains unclear the status of two of Georgia's commits - Pine Forest (NC) defensive lineman Lamont Gaillard and Lake Gibson defensive back Kendall Gant.

Gant visited Marshall this weekend while Gaillard took a trip to Miami.

Gant's visit to Marshall could signal the continued change in the recruiting philosophy for the Bulldogs under to new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt. Last Monday Tucker defensive back Dominick Sanders committed to Georgia, and the Bulldogs appear to have backed off MLK defensive back Wesley Green. Three weeks ago Jones' recruitment from Georgia went from non-exsitant to significant.

"He had a big senior season and schools noticed that," Jeff McLean, the head coach at Merritt Island said. "Shaq is a tall athlete who really plays corner well. He had a number of interceptions for us, he changed games for us this season, and he has so much potential. He is fast with good size and he is a very good athlete."

Jones is a long defensive back - 6-2, 175 - and is considered the #100 cornerback in the country and a three-star prospect by
