Grantham Leaves for Louisville DC Job

ATHENS – Todd Grantham will not coach at Georgia next season.

Georgia confirmed that Grantham is no longer the defensive coordinator at 6 PM.

Earlier in the day Joe Schad of ESPN, tweeted that Grantham accepted the position at Louisville - taking the spot for a guaranteed five-year, $1 million contract.

Grantham has not returned phone calls seeking commit. This is the second year in a row that Grantham's name has been linked with another job. Last year the New Orleans Saints interviewed Grantham days before Signing Day - throwing doubt onto the 2013 class the Bulldogs would sign.

As it turns out the 2013 class was very important for Georgia's defense this past fall - the Bulldogs started more true freshman than at any other time in school history in 2013.

Grantham arrived at Georgia in 2010, and for three years in a row statistically improved the amount of point-per-game allowed by the Bulldogs' defense. But in 2013, with a defense full of inexperienced and younger players, Grantham's defense fell backwards in national rankings, and Georgia sunk to 8-5 on the season. Grantham also took much of the fire from fans for the defense falling backwards dramatically in 2013.

Now Georgia, like many schools in coaching transition, will have to go back to the drawing board in terms of its defense. Now a decision will have to be made as to if the Dawgs would stick with the 3-4 defense Grantham used, or move back to a traditional 4-3 scheme.

Mark Richt, who has had three defensive coordinators in his time at Georgia, just hired a former Mississippi State defensive coordinator Chris Wilson to coach the defensive line in 2013, and that group performed well in the fall. As the defensive coordinator at State, Wilson's defense improved in seven major statistical categories while ranking 16th nationally in scoring defense (19.7 points per game).

But any search for a new defensive coordinator will almost certainly include Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, who played at Georgia in the 1990s and was the running backs coach under Richt in 2005.

Smart has helped Alabama to become one of the top defenses in the country over the last few years.
