The Georgia men's basketball team opened up conference play against Ole Miss. The Bulldogs came into the game red hot, winning nine of their first ten games and earning a No. 14 ranking in the AP poll. Georgia kept its momentum going and captured a 74-38 win over Ole Miss. It was the Bulldogs' largest margin of victory over an SEC opponent that year and the Rebels' lowest offensive output since 1970. Georgia went on to finish 18-8 and earned a berth in the Sweet 16. Both Shannon Anderson and Terrell Bell were selected by the Utah Jazz and Houston Rockets, respectively, in the second round 1996 NBA Draft.
#8 Georgia loses to #11 West Virginia 38-35 in the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. An embarrassing start was too much to overcome as the Bulldogs fell to West Virginia in a game that ended at 12:42 in the morning. The Mountaineers put up the most points ever against a Mark Richt team and the most against any Bulldog squad since Georgia Tech scored 51 in 1999. The game was scheduled to be in its traditional home at the Superdome in New Orleans, but was forced to move due to damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.
