Oliver Commits Suicide

Georgia DB Paul Oliver has committed suicide, according to a release from the University of Georgia.

Paul Oliver only played two full seasons at Georgia after redshirting in 2003. The Kennesaw native was set to take over the starting cornerback spot from Tim Jennings and DeMario Minter.

Oliver may be most remembered for his performances during his sophomore season. Oliver's interception helped during Georgia's 17-15 win over South Carolina. His performance against Auburn later that year. Against the Tigers, Oliver had six tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception. Oliver helped lead the Bulldogs to a 15-12 win over No. 16 Georgia Tech while holding All-American Calvin Johnson to two receptions for 13 yards. Oliver finished the Tech game with four tackles, one forced fumble, three pass break-ups and an interception.

Oliver considered leaving Georgia after his sophomore season, but decided in January to stay in Athens.

“I decided to come back for several reasons,” Oliver said in a statement released after he met with Coach Mark Richt. “I’m close to graduation, and that’s important to me. I think we have some good momentum, and I’m excited about the team we could have next season. And I hope to perform better and improve as a player.”

But Oliver was forced to leave Georgia a few months later after being declared academically ineligible.

“We’ll miss him for sure,” Richt said after Oliver in the spring of 2007. “He was aware there could be risks, but he decided to continue in school and get closer to his degree.”

The San Diego Chargers took Oliver in the 4th round of the 2007 NFL Supplemental Draft. His final year in the NFL was 2011.

Oliver was signed out of Harrison High School in Cobb County in 2003. He was considered a four-star prospect and the #5-ranked cornerback in the country. He was Nike Camp MVP at Georgia in 2002.

Oliver's class was the first class to sign with Mark Richt after the Bulldogs the 2002 SEC Championship.
