USC Week: Monday Practice Report

ATHENS - Georgia began preparations for its first home and SEC game on Monday with a one-hour workout in shorts on the Woodruff Practice Fields.

The Bulldogs (0-1) will entertain South Carolina (1-0) on Saturday at Sanford Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 4:31 p.m. and the game will be televised by ESPN.

The Bulldogs logged a full Labor Day on Monday by lifting weights, holding meetings and going through the practice.

"I was happy with the focus our guys showed throughout the day," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "We were just in shorts at practice and we started introducing them to South Carolina. It was a good start to the week. We know it will be a tough, physical game on Saturday, and we'll have to get prepared for that with our practices on Tuesday and Wednesday."

Richt said the captains for the South Carolina game will be tight end Arthur Lynch and tailback Todd Gurley on offense, end Garrison Smith on defense and receiver Justin Scott-Wesley on special teams.

Gurley was chosen Monday as the SEC Offensive Player of the Week and as the National Running Back of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards. In the 38-35 loss to Clemson, Gurley rushed for a career-high 154 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. His performance included a career-long 75-yard touchdown run on his first carry.

Also, the Bulldogs and the Gamecocks will be wearing Coaches Curing Kids Cancer stickers on their helmets Saturday to help raise awareness that September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The game will kick off the charity's "Blowing the Whistle on Kids Cancer!" campaign.
