Georgia approached this scrimmage like a dress rehearsal for the season opener against Clemson including kicking off at 8 p.m., going through pre-game warm-ups, having the game captains come out for the coin toss and then played two quarters of football. The action began with the Tigers holding a 28-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Georgia rallied for a 42-41 victory.
“It was a barn burner,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “We got done what we wanted. We had a lot of live kicking situations, and overall I thought everyone did a pretty good job including our graduate assistants preparing the scout team.”
Richt announced the game captains for the Clemson contest, and they will be four seniors in quarterback Aaron Murray, tight end Arthur Lynch, free safety Connor Norman and defensive end Garrison Smith.
Murray connected with Lynch for the go-ahead touchdown during a one-minute drill to cap about a 60-yard drive when the Bulldogs trailed by six points. Murray finished 11-for-14 for 194 yards, no interceptions and three touchdowns. Lynch had two catches for 16 yards. He was one of four players with two catches apiece. Freshman Reggie Davis had a team-high 29 receiving yards while sophomore Keith Marshall and junior Malcolm Mitchell had the other touchdown catches. Freshman J.J. Green was the leading rusher with 12 carries for 62 yards. Sophomore fullback Quayvon Hicks tallied two touchdowns on his only two carries.
Sophomore linebacker Jordan Jenkins and junior linebacker Ramik Wilson were the leading tacklers with four each including a tackle for a loss. Jenkins had a sack for minus five yards. Freshmen cornerbacks Brendan Langley and Shaq Wiggins each had an interception with Wiggins returning his for a touchdown.
“Those guys are getting reps and making plays,” Richt said when asked about the freshmen defensive backs. “They have good ball skills and good hands.”
The Bulldogs open their season on Aug. 31 when they travel to South Carolina to face eighth-ranked Clemson at 8 p.m. The contest, which is 2013’s only season-opening top-10 matchup, will be broadcast nationally on ABC.
