The Kentucky Wildcats capitalized on their "40 Minutes of Dread" defense to defeat Vanderbilt 75-53 Sunday afternoon in Memorial Gym. Tiffany Clarke led the Dores with 20 points. Christina Foggie scored 12 points, and Jasmine Lister added ten. Reigning SEC POY A'dia Mathies led all scorers with 28 points.
Sometimes the stats show the story of a game, and sometimes they don't. On Sunday the stats spoke truly, showing 24
Vanderbilt
turnovers leading to 27 points off turnovers for the Wildcats, and 18 offensive rebounds leading to 14 second chance points for
Kentucky
.
Despite the problems, there were moments of hope for pink-clad Vanderbilt fans. In the first half Vanderbilt held their own for the first twelve minutes of the half, matching the Kentucky defense with solid defense of their own. With 8:29 left in the first half, a basket by
Tiffany Clarke
put the Dores on top 17-15, but unfortunately for Vanderbilt, that was their last lead of the game.
Kentucky finished the first half on a 16-5, capped by a 3-pointer from
A'dia Mathies
just before the halftime buzzer, allowing the Wildcats to take a nine-point lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Kentucky lead stretched out to 13 points before a Vanderbilt run cut the lead to six points at 38-32. A few minutes later, a layup by
Elan Brown
again brought the Dores to within six points at 40-34 with 13:53 left in the game.
But then Kentucky went on a 14-4 run to stretch the lead out to 16 points, and Vanderbilt never came closer after that, trailing by as much as 26 points late in the second half.
As if things weren't already bad enough for the Dores, with four minutes left in the game
Azia Bishop
undercut
Christina Foggie
while diving for a loose ball. Foggie fell to the court in obvious pain and left the court with the assistance of the training staff. The extent of the injury to her right knee probably won't be known until she undergoes an MRI.
Vanderbilt looks to get back on the winning track on Thursday night when they host
Missouri
in Memorial Gym. Gametime is 7 p.m.
