As expected, Tennessee basketball player Jeronne Maymon will play his senior season in 2013-14, not 2012-13.

Head coach Cuonzo Martin announced late Sunday that Maymon, who missed the first 12 games of 2012-13, will redshirt this season. The announcement was made via email from the UT sports information office.

The release quoted Maymon as saying:

"It's really tough to know that I can't be on the court with my teammates this season," Maymon said. "But I have confidence in them, just like I have confidence in these coaches and our medical staff. I know this is in my best interest, and I am going to work incredibly hard to come back as an even better player and teammate next season. I love Tennessee.

"I believe everything happens for a reason, and I see this injury as a blessing in disguise. God does not make mistakes."

Maymon injured his knee late last season, then underwent offseason surgery. He played sparingly in the Vols' exhibition tour of Italy last August but did not see any action in the first 12 regular-season games.

Maymon's absence has left a gaping hole in the lineup as Tennessee has struggled to an 8-4 record this season. The Vols are shooting 42.4 percent as a team and averaging 64.5 points per game.

Maymon, a 6-foot-7, 265-pound transfer from Marquette, led the 2011-12 Vols in rebounds (8.1 per game), double-doubles (nine), field-goal percentage (55.8), field goals made (4.5 per game), steals (1.0 per game), deflections (71), three-point plays (13) and charges drawn (18). He led the entire SEC in free-throw attempts last regular season with 184.

After playing sparingly in 2010-11, Maymon had his breakout performance against Memphis on Nov. 11, 2011. He registered 32 points and 20 rebounds that day, becoming the first Vol since Steve Hamer (31 points, 21 rebounds versus Alabama on March 7, 1996) to post 20 points and 20 rebounds in the same game.

At his best in conference play, Maymon paced the 2011-12 Vols in SEC scoring (14.2 ppg), rebounding (7.9), field-goal percentage (57.3) and steals (1.2 per game). Remarkably consistent, he produced at least 12 points in each of Tennessee's 16 SEC regular-season games, helping the team finish second with a 10-6 league record.

Maymon started 32 of Tennessee's 34 games last season. He missed the first-round NIT game against Savannah State due to a sore knee but came off the bench in second-round action to lead the Vols in points (17) and rebounds (7) in a season-ending loss to Middle Tennessee.

Tabbed second-team All-SEC by league coaches and The Associated Press last March, Maymon was pegged the No. 69 player in college basketball by CBSsports.com heading into the 2012-13 preseason. He and Vol sophomore Jarnell Stokes, rated No. 25 in the same poll, were supposed to give Tennessee one of the most powerful post tandems in college hoops this season.

With Maymon sidelined, 6-foot-9, 230-pound senior Kenny Hall has taken his spot in the starting lineup. Hall is coming off one of his best games, a 13-point, 11-rebound effort in Friday night's loss to Memphis.

Hall is averaging 7.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game thus far. He's shooting 54.7 percent from the field. Maymon's absence also has meant more minutes for 6-foot-9, 250-pound sophomore Yemi Makanjuola.
