Auburn's defense led the Tigers to a 71-49 women's basketball victory vs. Temple.

Auburn, Ala.--The Auburn women’s basketball team scored 36 points off of 28 forced turnovers as they improved to 8-2 with 71-49 victory over Temple on Sunday.

Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy’s Tigers have now forced 25 over more turnovers in half of their games this season. The first-year Auburn coach has the squad off to its best record through 10 games since the 2008-2009 season.

Temple had beaten the Tigers three straight years prior to Sunday. “Everyone kept reminding us we had not beaten Temple,” Williams-Flournoy said. “It feels good for the players, it’s not me...I am really proud of our young ladies.”

The Tigers finished the contest with 16 steals. “We knew we could turn them over, but we wanted to make sure that we scored off of those turnovers,” Williams-Flournoy said.

Offensively, the Tigers shot 52.5 percent from the field, including 59.4 percent in the second half. Overall, the Auburn coach said she thought it was the most complete performance of the season for her team.

Tyrese Tanner led four Auburn scorers who finished in double figures. The junior guard scored 18 points as she hit 8-14 field goals.

Tanner said it felt good to finally beat the Owls. "We talked about it leading up to this game that we couldn't lose, especially for our seniors who hadn't beaten them," she said.

Sophomore guard Hasina Muhammad contributed to the victory with 16 points, six assists, six rebounds and five steals.

Blanche Alverson and Tra’cee Tanner scored 10 points apiece while Jet Ouardad tied her career high with eight assists and her season-high for steals with five.

The victory over Temple was the fifth game this season that the Tigers finished with four players scoring 10 or more points. Auburn took control of the contest early with its full-court pressure defense and led 30-17 at intermission.

The Tigers won the rebounding battle 36-32. The only major negative for the home team was its ball security as the Auburn 22 turnovers kept the game from being even more lopsided against a Temple team that dropped to 5-4 for the season.

Auburn returns to action on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. home game vs. an 8-1 UT-Chattanooga team that has already beaten SEC teams Tennessee and Alabama.
