UNC Impresses Ga. OL
"They just recently contacted my coach about me because he sent my [film] to them," Smith said. "And they really have been interested in the way that I play. So they contacted me and my coach." Smith says he first spoke to someone at UNC when assistant coach Deke Adams contacted him before the UNC-Georgia Tech game. "They wanted me to come up there so they could see me in person," Smith said. "He said they saw my [film] and they were very interested. He said they needed an offensive lineman and they really have interest in me. He asked me if I could come up there sometime soon." At the time of the UNC-Georgia Tech game, Columbia was making a late push for a playoff berth. Thus, it worked better for Smith schedule to wait until the Tar Heels' season finale against Maryland this past weekend to visit Chapel Hill. "[The visit] was like no other," Smith said. "I liked it more than any one of my visits to colleges. I liked the family theme. It really raised my eyebrows. I was impressed by everything. It wasn't even a big game, but the crowd still supported their team. I stayed throughout the whole game and I enjoyed myself." Besides Saturday's visit to UNC, Smith has visited Auburn and Georgia. During his UNC visit, Smith was introduced to most of the Tar Heels' coaching staff, received a brief tour of UNC's football facilities, ate lunch, and watched the team warm-up from the sidelines. During lunch, he conversed with Adams, who provided a quick update on the status of a UNC offer. "He said they're going to keep in touch with me," Smith said. "I think they're close [to offering]." Smith reports offers from Arkansas, Central Florida, Florida International, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, and Virginia. An offer would put UNC immediately in contention for Smith. "I wouldn't say I'd commit right away, but I'd say they are between No. 1 and No. 2 on my list," Smith said. "They definitely moved up in my mind when I went up there." On Tuesday, Adams visited Columbia and spoke more in-depth about where UNC stood with offering. "He said he wanted to bring the offensive line coach by with him next week and we'll talk more," Smith said. UNC, like most schools, is recruiting Smith as an offensive tackle. Since being promoted to varsity as a freshman, Smith has started on Columbia's offensive line at right tackle. Eric Smith Profile
