Each week the Alabama coaching staff selects players of the week from the previous game. The Crimson Tide had a relatively easy time of it last Saturday with a 49-0 win over Western Carolina and starters did not get a lot of playing time. The Bama coaches took note of the men in the trenches for most of the honors.
Seven
Alabama
players were recognized by the coaching staff for their outstanding performances following Saturday’s win over Western Carolina.
Anthony Steen
,
Chance Warmack
and
Michael Williams
were named players of the week on offense while
Nico Johnson
and
C.J. Mosley
represented the defense. On special teams,
Brent Calloway
and
Landon Collins
were selected.
Steen and Warmack led an offensive line that did not allow a sack and helped clear the way for
Eddie Lacy
and
T.J. Yeldon
to combine for 154 rushing yards on 17 carries with four touchdowns. Williams was credited for his blocking and protection, and he also added one catch for 22 yards.
The first team offense played just the first half as Alabama totaled 338 yards and established a 42-0 lead without a punt.
Mosley once again led the team with six tackles and had a tackle for loss. He has a team-high 89 tackles on the year with six for loss and has been selected as a player of the week nine times in Bama's 11 games. Johnson was credited with four stops and also had a tackle for loss, which was one of six on the day for the Crimson Tide.
UA held WCU to just 40 yards on 23 plays in the first half with two first downs. The shutout was the third of the season for the Tide. Alabama leads the nation in scoring defense and ranks second in total defense.
On special teams, Collins and Calloway each had two tackles on kickoff coverage. Collins had one inside the 20 and also downed a punt inside the 10 and forced a fair catch. Calloway recorded two stops inside the 20 on kickoff.
Alabama is 10-1 overall and 6=1 in Southeastern Conference games and ranked second in the nation. The Crimson Tide closes out regular season play Saturday when Bama hosts
Auburn
(3-8 overall, 0-7 in the SEC) in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. CST with television coverage by CBS.
With a win, Alabama would win the SEC Western Division title and advance to the SEC Championship Game against
Georgia
in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on December 1.
