Mark Richt spoke about the offensive line a fair amount this summer during his tour of Georgia. That seemed to be the number one question asked of the 12-year head coach.
“We’ve got the bodies there – that’s for sure,” he said.
But will the two redshirt freshmen who sat out last season be able to grab playing time? Zach DeBell and Xzavier Ward are both recovering form injuries, but one youngster seems to be ahead of the other.
“I am not saying Zach DeBell can’t compete for some playing time because it is pretty wide open on the offensive line,” Richt said. “But it would have been helpful for him to get some snaps in the spring.”
Richt said DeBell’s injury prevented practice time earlier this year.
“Zach wasn’t able to practice much,” Richt added.
But Richt was bullish on Ward, who didn’t play last season while recovering from an ACL injury.
“I think Xzaiver Ward is going to be a pretty good ball player,” Richt said. “He’s grown, but he’s still slim. He’s put on a lot of good weight. He could probably put on 40 or 50 pounds.”
Ward has already gained about 20 pounds since arriving at Georgia. He was listed at 270 pounds earlier this year.
