Dawg Post Era #3 - A.J. Green

Dawg Post is celebrating ten year of its magazine this week. Fletcher Page counts down the ten top players of the last ten years - today #3 A.J. Green.

Wide Receiver
Summerville, SC

Perhaps the most physically gifted player ever to play wide receiver in Athens, A.J. Green was equally low-key and humble.

The quiet superstar emerged on the scene with 963 yards and eight touchdowns his freshman year. The total led the SEC and was the third-most receiving yards in a single season at Georgia.

Injuries and a suspension kept his statistics down over the next two seasons, but his highlight reel catches and freakish ability continued.

Green played with three quarterbacks in three seasons, but neither that, nor opposing defenses, slowed him down. His signature moment came against Florida in 2010, when Aaron Murray laced a pass to Green through three Florida defenders for a touchdown.

Green also had important catches against LSU in 2009, Colorado in 2010 and Arizona State in 2008.

Unfortunately, Green’s career includes a dark time, too. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2010 after admitting to selling his Independence Bowl jersey to a runner for a sports agent. Georgia struggled to replace his production, losing three of the four games Green missed. The team finished with a 6-7 record – the worst since 1996.

Green declared for the NFL Draft following his junior season after totaling 2,562 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns.

He was selected fifth overall by the Cincinnati Bengals, setting the franchise record for receiving yards by a rookie (1,031). In fitting fashion, his first career catch in the NFL was a touchdown.
