Johnson Commits to Bulldogs
Rico Johnson

ATHENS - The Bulldogs received the verbal commitment of a blazing fast athlete Saturday.

Rico Johnson, a 5-11, 170-pound rising senior wide receiver prospect from Swainsboro, committed to Georgia while participating at the Mark Richt Camp in Athens.

"I dreamed of playing for Georgia," he said. "I like the coaching staff and how they make players feel at home. I like Athens a lot, too."

Johnson created a stir early on at the camp, when he reportedly ran a 4.28 in the 40-yard dash.

Twice.

"I think they noticed my speed," he said. "I ran fast and did well in the broad jump, too."

Johnson's speed has already led to success in other sports. He won the state championship in the 100-meters this spring. While his speed is overwhelming, Johnson is determined to prove he's more than a fast player. He wanted to use Saturday to prove he's an all-around player.

"I think the coaches saw my work ethic and how hard I was going out there," he said.

Much attention at the camp, by coaches and onlookers alike, was given to elite linebacker prospect Reuben Foster, the Alabama commitment who made the trip up to Athens.

Foster, however, did not participate. Johnson did, and he was impressive throughout the day until an ankle injury sidelined him.

The injury didn't matter. He had already done enough to garner the offer.

"Coach (Mark) Richt pulled me to the side and said he wanted to offer me," Johnson said. "I kind of cried a little bit and went to the side to talk to my coach about it.

"I came back and told coach Richt I was ready to be a Bulldog."

Johnson's commitment comes on the heels of the Bulldogs losing two verbals this week -- running back Derrick Henry and wide receiver Kyrin Priester.

Johnson's commitment gives Georgia 19 members in the 2013 class.

He joins Uriah LeMay, Tramel Terry and Reggie Davis at the receiver position, but has been told he could play defense, too.
