Former Diamond Dogs Lee Mitchell and Brandon Moorhead officially began their professional baseball career this week
Mitchell, a sixth round draft pick of the Florida Marlins, has started the first two games at third base for the Jamestown (N.Y.) Jammers of the New York Penn League. Mitchell went 1-for-2 with two walks in their season opener Tuesday, a 13-1 loss to the Auburn Doubledays. Mitchell is batting .200 (1-for-5) with three walks and three strikeouts for the short-season Class A affiliate of the Marlins.
Meanwhile in Everett, Washington Wednesday, Moorhead registered a save in his debut, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth as the Everett AquaSox won their Northwest League season opener 6-4 over the Vancouver Canadians. The Aquasox are the short-season Class A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Moorhead signed a minor league free agent deal with the Mariners before this year's professional draft.
Mitchell, Moorhead and outfielder David Coffey comprise a trio of former Bulldogs who have started their professional career this summer. After five games, Coffey is batting .474 with 4 RBI for the Augusta (Ga.) Green Jackets, the Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Coffey was a 23rd-round draft pick earlier this month. Also, Bulldog outfielder Jasha Balcom, a 33rd round pick of the Chicago Cubs, might return to
Georgia
for his senior season.
