Crowell first injured the ankle against Kentucky on Nov. 19, and missed the Georgia Tech game. He was limited against LSU in the SEC Championship game, but said he was healthy in bowl practices leading up to Monday's game.
The injury forced Crowell out of the game, relegating him to the sideline with a walking boot to protect the ankle.
The early exit provided a final frustrating note to Crowell's first season in Athens. He played through minor injuries to his ribs, wrist and knee in the early portion of the schedule. He was benched for a quarter against Vanderbilt for a violation of team rules and suspended for the New Mexico State game for reportedly failing a drug test.
"I'm going to remember the mistakes I've made, the good things I did," he said in December. "Now I've got the state of mind to keep working hard to be the best teammate and person I can be."
Despite the ongoing drama, the Columbus native still finished with 847 yards rushing on 182 carries and five total touchdowns on the year.
