Richt: Hot Seat? No. Fire? Yes

BIRMINGHAM - Mark Richt's first question was predictable.

"Are you on the hot seat," a reporter quizzed Georgia's head coach.

"We are going to find out a lot about our team fast. There is a fire under everyone. If something's hot its the fire," Richt said back.

For the first time in his 11-year tenure as coach at Georgia, Richt is answering questions about the hot seat. He covered a slew of topics at the annual Media Day event in Birmingham including:

Recently-returned running back Richard Samuel will open up fall camp as the number one running back. Highly-touted freshman Isaiah Crowell is expected to be the feature back as the season goes on. Richt didn't make any promises about the talented freshman.

"We don't expect him to come in and put the team on his back. We expect him to come in and do what we need him to do. We've not promised him playing time or the starting position," Richt said.

Georgia will wear Nike Combat Uniforms for the opener against Boise State, but the program is supposed to keep the details of the uniforms quiet until August when they are to be revealed.

Richt also said the SEC West is the better division at this moment.

"We haven't beaten those guys over there. They have played better," Richt said. "Is there a reason the West was winning those games? I don't know."

Richt pointed out, however, that the East has to send a team to Atlanta to play for the SEC Title in December.

"Someone is going to be the Eastern champ, and they are going to play one Western team on one Saturday and anything can happen," Richt said.

Richt said recruiting had gone well of late -the Bulldogs have picked up six commitments after the conclusion of their annual Dawg Night last weekend. Several of the commitments are from the class of 2013.

"I think it is a positive sign for our program that guys several years away are committing to Georgia," he said.

Richt also said that running back Carlton Thomas would serve a one-game suspension for a violation of team rules. Richt said that Thomas would be available for the South Carolina game.
