King's Career at Georgia Ends
Caleb King

ATHENS – The college career of Georgia running back Caleb King is over.

King was set to enter his final season at Georgia as the starting running back, but failed to meet academic requirements to play in the fall.

"It is unfortunate Caleb will not be with us this season," Georgia head coach Mark Richt said in a statement. "We wish him the best in whatever he decides to do; However, we have to move forward and this will provide more opportunities for others to step up."

King is the second running back to leave Georgia this offseason - the news leaves the Bulldogs very thin at running back. Washuan Ealey left Georgia after spring football when it appeared he could not escape head coach Mark Richt’s doghouse.

Ealey’s transfer seemed to indicate that King was set to be Georgia’s best returning option at running back. Now career backup Carlton Thomas, who has struggled with fumbles during his career at Georgia and has managed only 364 rushing yards in the last two years, is Georgia’s top returning running back.

Two freshmen – highly-touted Isaiah Crowell and Ken Malcome – will have to pick up the slack for the Bulldogs’ suddenly-empty backfield. Crowell was considered the top running back in the country last year by

King never seemed to find his footing while at Georgia. considered King a five-star running back in 2007, but he never lived up to that level of play in college.

He redshirted his first season at Georgia after breaking his leg during his senior season of prep football. King then backed up first round draft pick Knowshon Moreno in 2008. A hamstring injury sidelined him at the start of the 2009 season. But he came on strong that fall – starting five games after missing much of the start of the season. In 2010, King played in only eight games – starting five of them. His season was sidetracked after an arrest in October for failing to show up to pay a speeding ticket from earlier in the year.
