ATHENS - A prospective NCAA student-athlete has been charged with a theft-by-taking after allegedly nabbing iPhones and iPods out of the locker room at the University of Georgia during an unofficial recruiting trip on April 7th.

Deion Bonner, 18, and Marquise Hawkins, 17, turned themselves into Athens-Clarke County Jail Monday morning at 9:04 AM. Both posted a $1,500 bond for each charge and were released by 10:48 AM.

Sources close to the Carver program say that Bonner and Hawkins had the items for sale on Facebook, which helped University of Georgia Police tracking down just what was stolen. However, some of the items Bonner and Hawkins allegedly stole were sold and have not yet been recovered.

Deion Bonner, 18, is considered one of the top defensive backs in Georgia. The duo comes from one of the most talent-rich high schools in the South – Columbus, Georgia’s George Washington Carver.

Bonner had a scholarship offer from the Bulldogs as well as other SEC powers. He seemed headed to college at Georgia before the arrest.

Bonner and Hawkins have been kicked off the Carver football program, and could face expulsion from Muscogee County Schools.
