ATHENS - Georgia defensive coaches will be using Alec Ogletree differently this spring.

Sophomore Alec Ogletree is moving from safety to linebacker for spring practice.

“Him being that big and having the ball skills and having the quick hips like he does, he could be one of the best linebackers in the nation,” cornerback Brandon Boykin said.

Appearing in 12 games as a true freshman in 2010, Ogletree made five starts and recorded 34 tackles.

Ogletree’s size (6-foot-3, 224-pounds) brought forth questions regarding where he would play as a heralded incoming freshman out of Newnan High School. Although he remained at safety last season, many speculated the move to linebacker was inevitable.

That move has now been made.

Newly hired linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti requested Ogletree be moved into his unit shortly after his arrival last week. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham granted that wish.

“That should be an easy change and transition for him because he is so athletic,” Boykin said.

A 5-star recruit, Ogletree was the highest rated prospect in Georgia’s 2010 recruiting class. His twin brother, Zander, is a fullback on the team.
