ATHENS – On the most eventful day of the Georgia football team’s offseason so far, the Bulldogs lost one assistant coach but got two top recruits.

Stacy Searels was officially was announced as the new offensive line coach at Texas, leaving Georgia after four seasons.

Last year Grantham headlined an overhaul of the defensive coaching staff. This year Richt didn’t plan on making any changes on his staff – but Searels ended that.

Searels was lured to one of the nation’s most high-profile programs, which after signing a lucrative television deal with ESPN had plenty of money to give Searels a raise over his $290,000 salary at Georgia.

"When you're in this profession, you want to coach at the highest level," Searels said in a statement released by Texas. "From afar, I had always been interested in The University of Texas because I thought it was one of the premier jobs in the country. You can win a championship, you have great leadership, great players, a great pool of talent to recruit from, and I think there's no reason you can't win and win big at Texas, and I want to be a part of that."

Searels added that it was “very difficult” to leave Georgia, the state he grew up in. (The Trion native played his college ball at Auburn.) Searels also praised Richt, the other assistants and new athletics director Greg McGarity.

The Bulldogs struggled in Searels’ final year, ranking 10th in the SEC in rushing. Searels carried the title of running game coordinator the past two seasons. But his line performed much better his first three seasons.

Richt must now conduct a search for a new line coach. One possible candidate, former Georgia player and Auburn line coach Hugh Nall, said Thursday he had not been contacted, but wasn’t sure if he would be.

Richt was on the road recruiting and unavailable to comment, team spokesman Claude Felton said.
