ATHENS–Will Friend has been named Georgia’s new offensive line coach, the school announced Monday.

Friend comes to Georgia after four seasons as offensive line coach at UAB.

"I'm extremely excited about the opportunity to be the offensive line coach at Georgia," said Friend in a statement. "To have the chance to work with one of the top football programs in the country and with Coach Richt and the staff there is a tremendous opportunity for me. When I worked with Coach Richt and the staff as a grad assistant, I had a great experience and I always wondered if I might have the opportunity to come back to Athens. I am looking forward to getting to work."

Friend coached under former Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator and line coach Neil Calloway, who left Georgia to become the head coach at UAB before the 2007 season.

“I’m very familiar with Neil Calloway, and I’m certain that Will Friend will be a great addition to the Georgia staff,” said David Andrews, a 2011 Georgia signee.

Friend twice received All-SEC honors at Alabama. He was a four-year starter for the Crimson Tide, helping Alabama reached the SEC Title game on three occasions. "Will has played and coached under some outstanding, nationally-recognized offensive coaches," said Georgia coach Mark Richt. "He comes with a formidable resume of offensive football knowledge and experience. I got to see first hand his work ethic when he was a graduate assistant on our staff and since that time he's developed into a seasoned, top notch offensive line coach."

Also, Friend was a graduate assistant at Georgia for two seasons, helping Calloway coach the Bulldogs’ offensive line.

He is now returning to Athens after Stacy Searels, who coached the line from 2007-10, left for the same position at Texas in January.
